ELMORE Research [slave or free] ?

Confusion and Questions

I hope there is someone who might be able to and would be willing to offer some insight on some information that I have found in researching my family tree.

I have a family member (Rebecca) who is descended from an Absolum Elmore through his son Tully Elmore (who was born in Lenoir, NC around 1791).

Through research, I have discovered a Darias Elmore whose father was Tully from Lenoir, NC and born around 1791 with a father of Absolum (who is not on any census records anywhere). Tully is listed as having a daughter named Charlotte on the 1850 census.

My family's Rebecca with the VERY similar history named her daughter Charlotte Rebecca.

My quandry is this, Darius is listed as Black on the census, but everyone else, including his siblings on ALL census and other information are listed as white. So, how to find out if Absolum was a slave or free person of color is a big question. Also of note, neither family lists a wife for Absolum or a mother for Tully.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have promised to share my findings with my family and more than a few are gonna have a hissy if I even suggest we might have any ethnic heritage other than French (Huguenots) or German/Scot. I would like to be able to offer a substantiated explanation with documentation of a government sort to give them the authenticity they are going to need to accept these facts if my understanding is correct.

You may contact me by phone if you have questions that would be better answered verbally
