Re: Research trip: Halifax County, NC

There were articles in The Record (Warren County); The Roanoke News and one article referenced an article entitled "A Southern Woman" written in the New York Herald. The various articles had the following headlines:
"A Halifax Harrowing Horror"; "Blackest Crime of the Age - Foul Murder in Halifax"; "Crime That Leads to Lynching"; Horrible Crime at Halifax - Little Girl Murdered By A Negro Brute." The articles boldly threatened the black community saying such things as
"The way to stop lynchings is for the negro preachers and speakers to cry aloud against the one crime that leads to lynching. It is with them. Let them stop denouncing lynchings and denounce the crime that always leads to lynchings and then there will be no further need for Judge Lynch's services, when the crime ceases." On 27 Aug 1903, "the leading colored citizens" issued a statement to the Roanoke News in an article called, "Outrage Condemned." Karen
