Thanks for all of that information that you posted on William H Barnes. I took your suggestion and look at the list of soldiers that were in the 38th Regiment. What I found was three William H Barnes but only one that was promoted to sargent, and that is the one that received the Medal Of Honor. That is the one that is buried in St. Mary's Co. Maryland, and he was born in 1845 and died in 1936. There is a picture of him at this site http://www.ucaonline.org/barnes.html
I believe that one of the other two was the one that died in 1866 in Texas. The one that died in 1936 you can trace him on the census.
I send for his death certificate, and wrote to AFRICAN AMERICAN CONTRIBUTIONS IN ST. MARY'S CO. and I hope they can help.
