In Response To: Re: Leon SIMPSON, Cleveland Ohio ()
My grandfather, James Arthur THOMPSON, was born in Dayton, Rhea Co., TN in 1896. He was the third of four children born to John THOMPSON and Mariah MAYOTT THOMPSON. In the 1900 Rhea Co. census, his mother was listed as being a widow. She later married Harvey SIMPSON and had three more children.
James Arthur Thompson married Maude HOLMAN, the daughter of Guy Frank HOLMAN and Myria HENDERSON HOLMAN, of Dayton, Rhea Co., TN. James and Maude had three children: James Audra Thompson (my father), who was born in 1919; Edith Thompson, born in 1921; and Elizabeth Thompson, born in 1923. All of the children were born in Dayton.
Maude Holman Thompson died in 1926 in Dayton from tuberculosis. She was only 30 years old. Shortly afterwards, my grandfather moved with his young children to Cleveland, Ohio.
My grandfather later married Mattie WILLIAMSON in Cleveland. She was born in Kentucky.
James Arthur Thompson worked as a florist and as a window dresser at a large department store in downtown Cleveland. He was also a deacon at Mt. Haven Baptist Church on Cedar Ave.
He died on July 5, 1943 in Cleveland following a fall. He was only 47 years old.
My father, James Audra Thompson, was the valedictorian of the 1936 graduating class of Central High School in Cleveland. During World War II, he was a Tuskegee Airman. He died in California in 1995 and the funeral was held at Wills Funeral Home in Cleveland.
Both of my aunts have lived in Cleveland since 1926. They are Edith Thompson MANUEL and Elizabeth Thompson CRABLE MILES STEPHENS. My grandfather's half-sister, Rev. Mae Simpson HODGE, operated an income tax preparation business on Kinsman Ave. for many years before her death.
