Re: Malinda Marsalis
In Response To: Re: Malinda Marsalis ()

Sorry I took so long to get back to you.

In the 1920 census, it does show 'Malindy Marsalis' living with her son 'Ras', I did not see her daughter but she is located on Beat 4, Amite, Mississippi page 8 census.

If you turn back to page 7 you will find Ras and his wife's name. Page 8 doesn't start with another farm number, so she is still living in Ras' home-farm number 141.

As for the 'widow', my mistake, the S was smeared and looked like a Wd. If you found her somewhere else, well it looks like she may have been counted twice. That has happened with my family on several census enumerations.

I'm not calling your stories 'rumors', I'm just saying that sometimes as stories get passed down, things are missed, or misinterpreted. I can give you at least a dozen examples in my own family, and we were unusually well documented, and I have literally thousands of pictures including--4 of my great grands, 2 of my great greats and 1 great great great, and we still have misleading stories.

If you can't find Malinda in the 1870 census, and you believe she was born a Marsalis, look around and follow other AA Marsalis families, and see if they are relatives. Good luck.

Gwen
