Re: [Personalities] PRAISES FOR ROSA PARKS

All I can say is Praises for Rosa Parks for not showing up at the
: NAACP Image Awards. As you know Cedric theEntertainer is the
: host; and as we all know what happened in the movie Barbershop
: when the character, played by Cedric, made insults to the great
: lady and to Dr. King. What are your thoughts on the NAACP Image
: Awards at this time concerning this. Joseph

This is my understanding of the situation.

At the March 8 NAACP image Awards Ceremony, Cederic The Entertainer who made a scurrilous remark -my words- about Ms. Rosa Parks in the film “Barbershop” was to give Ms. Park an award honoring her civil rights achievements. He was hosting the show. Ms. Parks refused to attend.

Last year at the NAACP Image Awards Ceremony, Aaron McGruder, creator of Boondocks, had created brutal characterizations -my words again- of Dr. Condoleezza Rice in his cartoons and was scheduled for an award presented to him by Julian Bond. During the same event, Dr. Rice was to be presented an award by Kwasi Mfumi. Harry Balafonte refused to attend the ceremony if Dr. Rice was going to be honored. I never heard the end of this event.

Mr. Mfumi said the tradition was for him and Julian Bond to each present an award of their own choosing at the awards ceremonies.

I further understand from Joe Madison on Radio One that at the 11th hour, Bill Cosby, Ossie Davis and many others asked the governing board of the NAACP to re-consider Cederic’s appearance but a vote by the board was unanimous that he would go on as scheduled. The show was tapped on Saturday and will air on Thursday night, March 13th.

My position on this is simple: If Cederic The Entertainer were dis-invited due to public and internal pressures, the next time an actor or actress is asked to denigrate our AA icons, they would have the tools and backings of a viable institution to be able to say “No, no. no!! You will not jeopardize my chances of getting an NAACP Image Award. I will not do it.”

Fighting for the dignity of my Ancestors,
BB
P.S. Yes. I did E-mail the NAACP expressing my concerns. The CBC and NAACP are making me an old grouch. Maybe the Urban League can turn me into a handsome Prince. Hmmmmm.
