AfriGeneas Discuss! Forum Archive 2

Re: Why A Discuss Board?
In Response To: Why A Discuss Board? ()

VKN and All, Greetings!

I am making one of my rare appearances here as I ceased to participate in the Discuss Forum long ago. Admittedly, I do read select threads when time permits and often find myself chuckling aloud. :)

Due to my limited availabilty to conduct genealogical research, I decided to devote my time at Afrigeneas only in the pursuit of ancestral information. I stopped posting in general as I have been spending more time in the Archives and courthouses.

Some time ago, I grew weary of the personal attacks and cloaked racist comments that began to creep into informative discussions. Most of the posters are genuine but others are simply provocative. Thankfully, I have other outlets to discuss current events and controversial topics, therefore, I would not miss the Discuss Forum. I would, however, miss many of the Family members that I have grown to love and admire. I, too, have developed meaningful cyber relationships with many of you.

Viewing this from the "bottom line," I would evaluate the mot efficient use of bandwidth versus the benefits of the forum to the participants. It appears that there is a core group of posters generating most of the responses. Perhaps the Discuss Forum could be housed off-site such as the Native American Forum. It would appear here but actually link to a web site housed elsewhere. Tripod offers free websites. Again, at some point, storage space might become an issue.

The suggestion of a fee for usage could pay to host the Discuss Forum off site. Addr offers hosting for as little as $7.95 a month for about 100 megs of space and domain names can now be purchased for as litte as $19.00 per year.

These are my thoughts for now. Gotta head on back to my research. Good to see you all again.

Peace and Blessings, Alta
