Re: Query ~ Hispanic Race
In Response To: Re: Query ~ Hispanic Race ()
I wonder if Cubans, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans define themselves as "Hispanic"? Or do they see themselves as Mexicans, Cubans or Puerto Ricans? I think--I could be wrong-- Spain named the island shared by the Dominican Republican and Haiti as Hispaniola. That begs the question why aren't Haitians considered "Hispanics"? This exposes the thorny issue of "Hispanics" when it comes to individuals with African ancestors. I believe our government under the Nixon administration defined who could or could not be "Hispanic". It was a very slippery slope of defining people. It gives the impression that that someone was deliberately trying to keep Haitians from being "Hispanics" even though they live on the island that is historically Hispaniola. With that said, I think Haitians are proud to be Haitians which wraps back around the question of how do Cubans, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans see themselves? Messages In This Thread
