Here is a sample of what one contains:
Contract of Muntford Bean
Article of agreement between Muntford Bean, employer, and the undersigned laborers of the state of Mississippi and Chickasaw County this the 3rd day of Sept 1865
Muntford Bean is to furnish them with houses food fuel clothing and medical attention as heretofore for the balance of the year of 1865 and any money he may advance or furnish in addition to those above mentioned are to be charged and deducted from their wages.
He is also to give in consideration of their labor until the first day of January 1866 the eighth part of all the corn potatoes peas and molasses.
They are to obey the orders of the said Muntford Bean or his agent and do promptly and faithfully any and all work on the premises as heretofore for the balance of the year 1865.
They are not to leave the place without a permit. And are to report immediately any persons visiting them.
If any of the undersigned refuse or neglect to do fair and faithful work or leave the premises without permission, he or she shall be liable to dismissal and forfeit his or her part of the crop and such portion shall be divided among the remaining laborers provided two thirds of them remaining until the end of the year.
In testimony of our agreement to the within we have affixed our hand and bind ourselves to the above contract the year and date above written.
