AMA Records - Emerson Institute

A picture of the 'teachers' at the Emerson Institute (Mobile) is one of the images in the Amistad Research Center's online digital collections. The mixed group picture is very clear with names of the teachers scribbled on the back/side.
Out of the 16 names, I picked one to do a genealogical profile - Lorna Peters (black). The date on the picture was between 1922-1923, so I started with the 1920 census.

1920's [near date on picture]

A Lorna was found in Mobile (Ward 6) in 1920, living with her 'mother', Janie Peters, a widow.

This appears to be the right Lorna.

1930 Census [Mobile]

Lorna was now married. Her mother is still with her, as well as other family members.

1880 Census
Time to go to 1880 and find Lorna's father. Two children were born prior to 1880.
Found Moses and Mary J. (Janie?) with oldest child and sister.
Bonus: Two teenage siblings also living in the household. Great opportunity to extend the paternal line, or do some collateral research.
