Only men were allowed to vote (black and white). In fact, more black men than white men registered or voted. Apparently a condition of being able to vote was that you had to take an oath to the new United States of American. The oaths are available for photocopying as well at the archives. I was able to find my 3g-grandfather and his oldest son whom I didn't know existed. They were living in the Carlowville Precinct of Dallas County, AL. I was visiting my sister in Montgomery and I went over to the Archives to view the records.
I should be returning to that area around the end of the month. Give me a name, precinct and county to check and I will see if I can find your ancestor's name and make a copy for you.
