Re: Jesuit Plantation Project - MD & VA

I'm sure you will be able to find more information.

(1) They were part of a Roman Catholic Community in MD/VA. As such, they MAY have been baptized.

(2) They were bought by a prominent LA Land owner (Jesse Batey) - and MAY have ended up with the Henry Johnson family (ex-governor of LA) or [Judge] Edward Duffel of Ascension, or Henry S. Thibodaux or/and others. Security was offered by Miles Taylor, Henry Thibodaux, L. Barras (Judge of Terrebonne parish), Lemuel Tanner, et al. May lived in other parishes and MAY have shared business, personal, or family relationships.
A few of the Parishes mentioned were Pointe Coupee, St. James, Terrebonne, Ascension, Iberia, Iberville.
Check for the Batey/Beaty or Johnson papers (or estates).

(3) A Mortgage was taken out - and would appear in the court records. [The release may also have been filed.]

(4) There is more information in the Archives...
Conditions of the Sale: [Enforce-able?]
(a) Remain Catholic [May have chosen to remain so after freedom.]
(b) Keep Families Together [Search records from 1865-1870...]
...

Although most of the records are not online, you may be able to call for more information on obtaining copies. First review the offerings.
