Leslie Schwalm has written several nice articles, and a really good book published in 2009 titled Emancipation's Diaspora: Race and Reconstruction in the Upper Midwest. I currently have it checked out from a university library, and I see that she has the account of your ancestor's civil disobedience on page 194. Very cool!
