Re: Last Living Buffalo Soldier
In Response To: Last Living Buffalo Soldier ()

Wow, ain't technology a wonderment. My l0th grander kindly showed me how to scroll through all messages posted on this site--not just ones over past few days.

Anyway, on messages about a month ago on Last Living Buffalo Soldier, Mark Matthews, l09 years old.
Has anyone contacted his daughter in D.C., with whom he lives, to see if this old fellow would be willing to sit for a tape recorded (film too) interview? Perhaps his meory is faded--or gone, but perhaps not.
His preserved memories would be most valuable. Some of you may know that Don Rickey, Jr conducted some wonderful interviews with Indian Wars vets back in the l950s and early 60s. Hate to see this Matthews oppportunity missed before this vet shuffles off to Buffalo (no pun intended).

Yeas back I took great delight in a book titled Willy Remembers (can't recall author). Willy is recalling, in the l950s, his military service from the Spanish-American war on. He recounts heading up San Juan Hill only to run smack into a German (he used ther "Hun") machine gun nest. Well, memory is selective and stories do fade or run together.
But if Matthews is legit (and his service record should be peeked at),them someone should try and make an appointment with him and his sister. I'm stuck in Mississipi, so it ain't going to be me.
