Re: No Wine for the 93rd
In Response To: No Wine for the 93rd ()

Additionally, I forgot to mention that absolutely NO items of French uniform other than boots and steel helmets were issued to any of the four regiments of the provisional 93rd Division while under French command. Quartermaster records, period images, and diary accounts all prove this beyond doubt. The only "account" to the contrary that I've seen in over 15 years of research is an anecdotal mention in 'From Harlem to the Rhine' of a member of the 369th having been seen wearing a horizon blue French overcoat which he had picked up on the battlefield.

There has also been a photo of an African Colonial infantryman published in several books over the past 25 or so years as, well as on the web, which is repeatedly misidentified as being an American. However, the presence of the 'colonial anchor' collar tabs on his overcoat (which were never issued to any US troops, they retained their US Army insignia throughout) are a dead giveaway as to his TRUE nationality.
