Re: Confederate Daughter Who's Black

Hi Doll:

Thanks so much for the link. This dear old lady maybe unique in the sense that she is one of the surviving offspring of a confederate who Served (Not as a Soldier) in the rebel army.

I'm always a bit bemused by articles linking African Americans to the confederacy.

Unfortunately there are many of us whose ancestors did more than serve in the rebel army. Not to worry, the daughters of the confederacy, clutching applications, will not be knocking on our doors anytime soon. That's because our granddaddy's granddaddy was a white man. Just because our granddaddy's granddaddy upheld the "noble cause" of the confederates, didn't mean that he stopped his nightly scurry to the slave cabins.

Perhaps these white ladies whose grand-mama's grand-mama haven't read the on-line presentation of Slaves and the Courts or researched divorce records in Southern archives. They reveal that were plenty of angry women who didn't appreciate the large number of slave children who looked like their husbands. Even more annoying were the slave children that looked like them. Thanks to their very busy fathers, brothers and cousins.

Thank goodness for those court records. These primary sources help the Afrigeneas family research its ancestry. I am sure many of us have read in disgust the records that show our ancestors' owner/relative was a member of the confederate rebel army.

This southern tradition was an open secret even to the Union Army.

"The poor negro in fighting for liberty in its truest sense, and Mr. Jefferson has beautifully said, "In such a war there is no attribute of the Almighty which will induce him to fight on the side of the oppressor."

You say you are fighting for liberty. Yes, you are fighting for liberty -- liberty to keep 4,000,000 of your fellow-beings in ignorance and degradation; liberty to separate parents and children, husband and wife, brother and sister; liberty to steal the products of their labor, exacted with many a cruel lash and bitter tear; liberty to seduce their wives and daughters, and to sell your own children into bondage; liberty to kill these children with impunity, when the murder cannot be proven by one of pure white blood. This is the kind of liberty - the liberty to do wrong - which Satan, chief of the fallen angels, was contending for when he was cast into hell."

Below is a URL to Bennie's Lest We Forget. Read the complete letter from Major General David Hunter to Jefferson Davis.

Doll, thanks again for your link. It inspired me to find David Hunter's letter and remember that the confederates…granddaddy or not were ready to die to protect the enslavement of our ancestors.
