Hi Researchers,
I had a situation in my family where the mother was white and she had at 3 daughters by a black man and they were said to be "free" in the Census. So were they really free? But they were "Bound Out" to work for white families in the area. She had at least 3 Mulatto daughters and at least 2 were documented as "Bound Out". Maybe the others were too young.
My gr grandmother lives with the family from the age of 4-13 years. It seems that she stayed with them and when the family had children she was more like a housekeeper for the white family.
So am I missing something when one is said to be "bound out"? Could some expand on "bound out"?
Thanks very much.
Alice
