Re: CHAVIS, John
In Response To: Re: CHAVIS, John ()
Thanks for all of the great responses, guys! I have searched censuses for Chavis people and I have found one in SC as early as 1790, but there is no mention of where he went afterward, nor with whom he was living while in SC. Some of the Lumbee claim descent from this Jordan Chavers who I believe is also one of my ancestors. I have also found that some of the Chavis people from Lunnenburg, VA; Edgefield, SC; Sumter, SC; and Orangeburg, SC, but it is so hard to prove any relation. I would have to search practically every line and then find one of their descendants to do a DNA test with. An interesting thought: my grandmother pronounces that last name as "Shavers" but spelled it "Chavers". She also said that we were Cherokee. The Cherokee were/are in Edgefield County, SC so the Chavis name there is of great interest to me! I have been VERY busy and mentally drained from thinking about it, so I am planning a break and will hopefully continue my research in a couple of months. However, I am still open to advice and leads!! ;-)
