My Chavis(sp?) was Mariah Chavis born about 1836 in South Carolina. All census records label her as Black. I'm not sure where she came from, but when she married my uncle Peter (many generations back), she had 2 children by her first marriage, Francis and Mallard McBride. There is another Mariah Chavis in SC (from Orangeburg), but she was born in 1820. Oddly enough, this one is also Native American...Pee Dee Indian. Would you happen to have any Chavis info. already?
