Introduction and a Couple of Questions

Hello everyone, my name is Jeff. I found this forum while researching my family history.

A little background. I'm an adoptee who just reconnected with my birth family this year. I did the DNA test with and it turns out my youngest half-sister also took the test and that's how we were able to connect.

My sister emailed me a basic family tree on our maternal side that went back to our great grandparents. I set up a tree on and that's when I started to dig deeper.

From what I've learned so far, I'm descended from the Goings family and the Brocks from Albemarle County, Virginia. Other surnames I've found that may be connected to Albemarle include Leake (Leek), Johnson and Cary.

As far as the Goings, I learned that Henderson Goings most likely is my great-great-great grandfather through his daughter Rebecca. According to Kirk von Daake's book Freedom Has a Face, I may also be descended from Benjamin Goings, Sr. as his daughter Mary married Richard Brock and their son Zachariah was my great-great-great grandfather through his son Nimrod.

I do come up as a relative match with one person who has Henderson as a direct ancestor whose last name may be Goins as well, although I'm not certain as only initials are posted in the profile and I have not heard back from the administrator of the profile. I also have matches with others who have Goings (or Goins) in their family trees.

Okay sorry for the long intro. Now to my questions:

1) I've seen posts on this forum where it mentions Henderson as the son of Sherrod. But in Free African Americans, he is listed under "other Goings family members." How certain is it that he is Sherrod's son? If this is the case, then I am descended from two sons of Agnes.

2) Speaking of Agnes, I've seen different things listing her as a descendant of a man from Portuguese Angola through Mihil. Is that certain or conjecture?

3) I can't find the Brock family in the Free African Americans book posted online. I do see a Brooks family. Is there a connection?

Sorry for the long post. If any of the questions have been answered in other posts please let me know so I can look them up.

Thanks and I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

P.S.: I forgot to mention, my great grandfather Joseph whose parents were Nimrod Brock and Rebecca Goins ended up in Iowa where he married Lillie Leek in the 1890s. Their descendants migrated to Minnesota in the 1930s or 1940s.
