This Indenture of manumission made and entered into this
12th day of April in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight,
between Henry Dodge Iowa County in the Territory of Wisconsin
of the first part, and Tom, a coloured man about seventy years of age:
Lear a coloured woman, about fifty two years of age; Jim a coloured
man about fifty years of age; Joe a colured man about thirty four
years of age; and Toby a coloured man about thirty four years of
age of the same county and Territory of the second part. Witnesses that Whereas
the said several parties of the second part, was in the state of Missouri
in the year eighteen hundred and thirty seven, the servants and slaves
of the said Henry Dodge of the first part and Whereas in the said year
last mentioned the said Henry Dodge of the second part removed from
Missouri to that part of the then Wisconsin territory of Michigan, which now
constitutes the Eastern part of Wisconsin Territory, and the said several
persons of the second part, voluntarily removed, with him the said
party of the first part whose intention it was at a convenient time
to make them of the second part a proper deed of manumission that
they might be enabled to place upon records, according to law the
evidence of their freedom. And it being entirely inconvenient here
tofore from various circumstances, without the control of said Henry Dodge
of the first part, to put his intentions into effect. Now therefore for
and in consideration of the premises, and of the faithful services of
the said several persons of the second part done/dous and rendered to and for the
said party Henry Dodge, in the state of Missouri, previous to the period
of their removal as aforesd he the said Henry Dodge of the first
part, now for them Doth manumit, absolve from all obligations to serve and forever

forever set at liberty the said several persons therein named of the second
part. Hereby warranting and defending to them, against all claims or
obligations to services whatever of him the said Henry Dodge of the
first part his heirs Exors, Adm, and assigns forever.

In testimony whereof the said Henry Dodge of the
first part has here to set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year
first herein above written.

This day personally appeared
before the undersigned Chief Justice of Wisconsin Territory
Henry Dodge who is personally known to the said Chief
Justice to be the real person who executed the foregoing
Deed of Manumission who then and there before said
Chief Justice acknowledged that he signed, sealed and
delivered the said Deed, freely and voluntarily, for the uses
and purposes therein mentioned.

Know men by these presents That Mr. Tom a man of colour, Jim a man
of colour, Joe a man of colour, Lear a woman of colour and Toby a
man of colour are held and Henry Dodge of the County of Iowa
and Territory of Wisconsin are held firmly bound into the
said Territory of Wisconsin for the use of the County of Iowa in the
final sum of two thousand five hundred dollars which payment
will and truly to be made un bind absolve heirs, executors and
administrators jointly and severally and firmly by them presents dealing
with our seals and dated this 14th day of April AD 1838.

The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas
the above named, Tom, Jim, Joe, Lear and Toby are free persons of
colour and are desirous of settling in said county, now if the above
said Tom, Jim, Joe, Lear, and Toby shall not at any time become
a charge to said county or any other county in this Territory, as a
from/free? persons and if they shall at all time demean themselves in strict
conformity to the laws of this Territory that now are, or hereafter may
be inacted, then this obligation is to be void, otherwise to remain in
full force and virtue.
