AfriGeneas Free Persons of Color Forum

Just checking to see if anyone has any tips on researching free people of color in Canada.

I have discovered that around the Civil War era (1860s) some of my ancestors lived in the Chatham area of Ontario from around 1868-1900 and I am wondering if there are any tips for researching Canadians.

I have been researching the SNIVELY family (variations - SNIVELLY/SNIVELEY/SNIVLY, etc.)

Ancestors of interest include George SNIVELY and wife Catharine, both born approximately 1809-1812 and their children - Zacharias, June, Amelia, Jeremiah (my 4th great grandfather), James, Abraham, and George Jr.

I have found George Sr. on Canadian census records on Family Search and Grandville SNIVELY the son of Jeremiah was born in Canada and moved to MI in the late 1890s/early 1900s.

Zacharias and all his brothers served in the USCT and they were orginally from Pennsylvania.
