Another thing to consider is that unless you are researching a relative after 1870 for most African Americans there were no surnames. So we are usually using DNA to give us leads on relatives who were seperated by slavery or might connect us to Africa. a 12 marker match gives you a high probability that these two ground rules have been met. a 24 or 25 marker match a higher probability.
