Re: Looking for stories for NPR program

What motivated you to pursue DNA testing?

1. Always wanting to know where in the large continent of Africa my forefathers originated.
2. Being humiliated by an elementary teacher who asked students to tell of their "nationality" back in the 1960s. I was the only black in the class and did not know what to say. The other students proudly told of their European ancestry (e.g. Italian, Swedish, and German). My father later reprimanded the teacher and told him the the entire class shared the same "nationality" since we were all US citizens.
3. Viewing a special on one of the network morning shows

Did the results affect your perception your identity or of your history?

Absolutely! I feel like others report when they discover their birth parents. I want to know more about "my people" -- the Tikar people from Cameroon. I feel that these people had to have been resilient since they survived the Middle Passage. I want to know if they share my values.
