My husband's is thru Rose Copeland born abt 1820 in Nansemond County, VA. Her children later married into the Howell, Boon Collins, Weaver families from the counties in southeastern VA and northeastern NC i.e. Gates, Hertford, Bertie, Southampton, etc. The Collins and Weavers are supposedly native american. Not sure if most of the folks from that area were mixed but this is the area where some archeological studies have been/are being done in connection to the Great Dismal Swamp. Also some of these families claim a connection to the Tuscarora Indians.
As for Virginia, some of the Melungeon articles mention slaves from Angola being tranported to the area before 1700. If that is the case, wouldn't that help to explain at least a Portugese connection, if not one from the islands and/or Brazil?
