Dear Diane Turner,
I hope you are still actively looking for your ancestor? I would assume so because this web site is still active?
I just recently got the internet to enhance my genealogical research of over 25 years. Just like you I have family ties to Caddo County-Shreveport, Lousiana and New Orleans. My family is primarily from Texarkana, Ark-Tex; as you may know, Shreveport is only a stones-throw from Texarkana.
It just so happens that I was researching the history of Caddo County when I ran across your request for info on the following data.
I hope the information I forward is of use to you? The greatest source for such information can be found at Ancestry.com. I was able to find my family in 30 minutes back to 1799, after working 25 years only to get back to 1900.
Although I could not find the specific data you sought for 1870. I did find information for the 1880 Census as follows:
In 1880,Melia Mitchell is the wife of 40 year-old George Payne, and is now Melia(Melia is the correct name)Payne. She is 46, six years older than her current husband George, who is a farmer. They have a 6 year-old daughter Anna(born in Lousiana), and of course their other children, George's step-children, Charley Mitchell 19, Eva 16 and Conelius 13, are all farm laborers. Her current Husband's family is from Virginia. Melia's father is from South Carolina, but her Mom is from North Carolina. Her three children with surnames Mitchell, like Anna, are born in Lousiana. Their father, however, is from Georgia. So you may want to research the "Mitchell" surname in Georgia. The Payne family is living in Shreveport(Caddo County), Lousiana, on a General farm, district 19.
Good luck with your search!
