I'd like to add one more note that I believe supports the "melting pot" idea, which has fallen out of favor among some sociologists but to which I still subscribe. Although I mentioned only Euro American and African American cultures, my definition of a "shared" history definitely includes Hispanic American, Asian American and Native American cultures.

My research, and that of many other historians, has turned up very close links between African Americans and Native Americans here in Central Pennsylvania as far back as the middle 1700's.

By the early 1900's, African Americans in the industrial town of Steelton were opening their homes to Hispanic boarders. Similarly, Asian Americans here have shared housing in African American neighborhoods and shouldered the burden of racism and poverty since before the Civil War.
