Your comments about being questioned about your motives for researching African-American history brought back memories.
I asked a well known European historian and author the same question.
Her response was simply this," You wouldn't ask me that question if I was researching Greek/Roman history, would you?" She was absolutely right. Why shouldn't she study an historical period or culture that affected most of the world?
Ironically, almost a month later someone asked me "Why would you want to study French literature in college?" I was ready with my answer.
"You wouldn't ask me that if I was studying African history."
One-dimensional cultural-centric thinkers are boring.
Studying other cultures helps us to better appreciate our own.
