What a wonderfully succinct and elegant answer to a classic racist diatribe.

As a white researcher in the field of African American history, I find myself always having to answer the question "why is a white man interested in Black history?" Although the question itself, being inherently racist, disturbed me, I held my tongue and patiently explained how the subject was a vital part of American history that just happened to fascinate me.

In the past several years, however, I have become more vehement in promoting African American history and Euro American history as "shared" or "common" histories. To ignore, downplay or deny the importance of either culture in the study of American history is to miss out on the intense interplay between the races as this country developed.
