Art...your post and the current situation in southern California (the fire-storms) has prompted me to respond. It is not commonly known that African Americans have been a part of both the volunteer and paid fire departments throughout this country for a very long time.
True, many departments have tried to remain segregated, but, many departments (both paid and volunteer) have had African Americans in service to their communities since the end of the enslavement era (especially in communities that were/are African American). Despite not getting much attention in the media, etc., we've (African Americans) always been there helping to protect our communities and neighbors. Thanks for your post.
