Re: 100 Years of Lynching by Ralph Ginzburg

Deborah, I was going through old newspapers from Rusk County, Tx. and ran across this item printed sometime in 1886:

"Ben Lane was hung in San Augustine County (Texas) on the 19th instant. The first white man ever hung in that county-for the murder of Sarah Ann Dyke in 1884. (p.2, c.1)"

I imagine Ben would have preferred someone else would haveclaimed that distinction. I'm curious about the number of legal and illegal hangings for that county in so far as black folk are concerned prior to 1886. You still got that book and does it cover hangings; illegal and legal?

Oh well, while I'm at it, here's a couple of items to file under Hmmmmmm.....

"Death: Texarkana, Ark. May 19th-George Washington, colored, living one mile north of town committed suicide yesterday evening by shooting himself with a pistol, The cause was jealousy. (P2 C4)"

"Death: Shreveport, La. July 28th-yesterday, Miss Lucy V. Yancey, daughter of Mr. Daniel Yancey, suicided having been outraged some five months ago by a colored servant Ben Ford and finding she was pregnant. (P2 C3)."

Come to think of it, did poor Ben Ford make the book?

Thx, Preston
