alt: there is a WW I book by a guy named Wendell Scott... has a lot of WW I rosters 3rdthawkins

3rdthawkins: ok AmosNY I don't know, I have a Ed Hawkins who was found in 1920 on Philippines Island Troop K Regiment 9 Calvary

Seventies Soulchild: Would there be some alternate records that would indicate military status?

3rdthawkins: oops Amos...........ok alt I don't know Seventies, he is not found in 1930 census, and no identifiable record of him after 1930

daviss: interesting. What about a city directory or perhaps looking on the va cemertery sites

3rdthawkins: I have to locate him him daviss, he was in Richmond, VA on his draft card I checked the National Cemetery lists on U.S Department of Veterans Affairs

Seventies Soulchild: I know ancestry does have WWII and WWI records online for those who enlisted.

3rdthawkins: I haven't found the WWI enlistment, only the draft cards

Seventies Soulchild: It gives their HOR & where they were stationed for Basic Training HOR = Home of Record

Seventies Soulchild: The two books added to the collection here at west point: "Whence They Came: The Families of United States Colored Troops in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 1815-1995" and "United States Colored Troops Civil War Digest" So if anyone is looking for USCT folks, this seems like a good resource.

alt: nope, she has Smith, Powers, Henry & others, but they are mostly in the GA also.

daviss: I found my father and all his brothers they were there

3rdthawkins: I'm looking at the search results now, no Edward or Edgar, Ed or Eddie

Seventies Soulchild: Maybe there was something destroyed in the fire in the 1970's in St. Louis.

alt: 3rdthawkins, look at individual States for WW I records on Ancestry... they have the 23 volume set of Ohio soldiers & sailors online. w/service records.

Seventies Soulchild: Ohio kept state records on military? Awesome!

3rdthawkins: ok, Ohio kept all kinds of records

alt: here are draft cards & service records for my family found on Ancestry.

Seventies Soulchild: I mean I know that they keep regional Veteran's records now.

Seventies Soulchild: I was browsing through Christine Charity's website this weekend. I really like what she's done with it. Alt your page is one of the top links... :)

daviss: and you can sometimes see in the newspapers where hometowns listed those going off to war
