  • HISTORY & BACKGROUND

It is clear that blacks, both free and enslaved were present in Kentucky from the very beginning of statehood   (1792)  and in Fincastle County and Kentucky Counties, Virginia; from which Kentucky was formed. There have been several books and articles written on the subject, some of which are listed below:

    • The fascinating Story of Black Kentucky-Their heritage and Tradition by Alice Dunnigan
    • From Slavery to Segregation 1790-1891 by Marion B. Lucas
    • In pursuit of Equality by George C. Wright
    • The Legal status of free blacks in early Kentucky by Juliet E. K. Walker
    • Kentucky Law Concerning Emancipation or freedom of slaves by Edward M. Post
