Levi WEBB I have a handwritten book/scrapbook made by Jennie May Webb WESPEY, Kate ALEXANDER, and Carrie WEBB. In it is copied a letter written by Levi WEBB to Col. James D. WEBB and some comments about the letter. It mentions Levi WEBB's father Charles WEBB, and the fact that Levi WEBB died in 1863, sometime after July 3, 1863. Hope this helps someone. Alice Campbell --------------------------------------------- An Old Letter The following letter was penned by Levi Webb, colored, to his master Col. James D. Webb. The father of Levi was Charles Webb, the body servant of Judge Henry Y. Webb of Hillsboro, N.C. Charles was given by his master Judge Webb to his eldest son, Major W. P. Webb of Eutaw, Ala. Charles lived to be quite old and was highly esteemed. He reared his son Levi carefully, and the latter earned for himself the goodwill of all who knew him. Levi was devoted to his master Col. Webb as the following letter will show. While his master was at the front, Levi filled a place of trust and responsibility - which he filled well. Greensboro, June 15,186? My dear Master and Friend, I seat myself at my bench to hurriedly write you a few lines by Mr. Allen Jones. I went up to his house to see him and had a talk with him about you. He told me that you were well and doing well and I was glad to hear it. I hope you will continue to do well. If you put your trust in the Lord, you will do well and that I hope you do. I pray for you daily, that you may come home in good health and in honor. Everything is going straight about the home as far as I can see. Josh is cutting and hauling wood and selling it at 1.25 a load; that is what Mr. Owen told him to ask. Your horses are looking fine and everything about home is well, and all send love to you and hope the Lord will bless you and take care of you. I heard from Miss Jessie (Col. Webb's wife) the other day and she and the children were well. My family are well and send their love to you. Take good care of yourself, Master. It is my daily prayer that the Lord will bless you and return you home. Your humble servant, Levi Webb Levi died a few months after his master in 1863. (Col. Webb died July 3, 1863) Contributed by: "Alice Campbell" acampbell@nconline.com
