Notes for LEWIS TURNER: 8-29-1814 Lincoln Co., Georgia marriage records Book G page folio #7 has the following: I do hereby certify that I did join in Holy State of Matrimony Lewis (last name unreadable) & Miss Susannah Stewart on the 29th of August 1814. signed John Hardey. Recorded this 13th of Sept. 1814. This record is the only one that could be Lewis's marriage. As all his siblings have a marriage record in this County it is most likely that this is his. Lewis was a resident of Tatom's Militia District of Lincoln Co., Ga got 2 draws and won Lot No 383 in Section/District 6 Early County as well as Lot No. 115 in Section/District 18 Early County. His will confirms that he owned lot 383 at his death and willed it to Eveline. (Is this our Lewis? if yes then what happened to the other children? in his will he only identifys Eveline who by this date was married? Are these perhaps the children of Margarette? Did Eveline's mother die bet 1830-1847?) ____________________________ 5-5-1847 A Will recorded in Lincoln Co., Ga reads as follows: 'In the name of God amen, I Louis Turner of said state and county, being of advanced age and knowing in the ordinary course of nature I must shortly depart this life, deem it right and proper both respects my family and myself that I should make a disposition of the property with which a kind providence has blessed me, do therefore make this last will and testament hereby resolving all others heretofore by me made. Item 1: I desire and instruct that my body be buried in a decent and christian like manner suitable to my circumstances, and condition in life. My soul I trust shall return to replenish God who gave it as I hope for eternal salvation through the merits and atonements of the blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Item 2: I desire and direct that all my just debts be paid as soon as the same can well be done by my executors herein after appointed. Item 3: with the provision and instructions herein after mentioned I give to my beloved daughter, Eveline Murray, wife of Sylvestor Murray, for and during the term of her natural life for the support of her and her children the use of the following named negros and their increases to wit: Joe, Sopha, Calvin, Jordan, Milley, Henry, Ben, Rachael, Patsey, Mary, Eliza, and Celey. Which said slaves nor their increases are to be subject to the debts of the pursuit on any future husband of my daughter. All of which said negros to be delivered by my executor to my son-in-law, Sylvestor Murray to be held in trust by him for the purposes afore said. Item 4: I give and bequeath to my grandson, Beverly W. Murray, my negro boy, Isham, to him and his heirs forever. Item 5: I give and bequeath to my granddaughter, Nancy E. Murray, and her heirs forever my negro girl Jane. Item 6: I give and bequeath to my grandson, Louis Turner Murray, and his heirs forever my negro girl Sylva. Item 7: I give and bequeath to my grandson, Hillery M. Murray, and his heirs forever my negro boy Tom. Item 8: I give and bequeath to my grandson, Flemming L. Murray, and his heirs forever my negro boy Harrison. Item 9: I give and bequeath to my grandson, Andrew J. Murray, my negro boy William to him and his heirs forever. Item10: Subject to the same provisions and instructions as mentioned in the third clauses of this will I give to my beloved daughter, Eveline Murray, for and during the term of her natural life for her support and the support of her children all my stock of every kind whatsoever consisting of, horses, hogs, cattle, sheep and also all my household, kitchen furniture and plantation tools and tools of also other kinds. At the death of my said daughter, I give and bequeath the afore mentioned property with all the increases thereof to the heirs of the body of my said daughter with the expressed understanding that should it be deemed best the last aforementioned property may be sold by my executors and the money arrising from the sale thereof to be paid over to my son-in-law, Sylvestor Murray, to be held in trust by him for the purposes aforesaid. Item 11: With like instructions and provisions as the third clauses herein mentioned I give to my beloved daughter, Eveline Murray, for and during the term of her natural life for her benefit of her and her children all that tract of land situated lying and being the south district of Early County, Georgia and known in plan of said district by number three hundred and eight-three containing 250 acres and also all that tract of land situated lying and being in Lincoln Co., and said state, the same whereon I now live containing originally 445 acres except 15 acres more or less which I have cut off and reserved to and for the use of a negro woman, Margarette, and her children and which 15 acres is bounded by my fence as it now runs on two sides and on the other 2 sides by Joseph Prather's land which said land herein excepted said woman, Margarette, has heirs me for and I therefore here desire that she and her children shall have the use of the same without interruption or molestation. And at the death of my said daughter I give the aforementioned two tracts of land except as herein entered to the heirs of the body of my said daughter, Eveline Murray, with the expressed desire that should my executors consider it best, they shall sell at any time that they may think proper both of said tracts of land herein willed and hand over the money arrising from the sale thereof to my son-in-law Sylvestor Murray to be held in trust by him for his present wife and the heirs of her body. Also all other of my property not herein before named. Item 12: I hereby constitute and appoint my friends John W. Hambirck and Benning B. Notes for MARGUARETTE: Marguarette is listed in Lewis' will as a negro woman who had heirs for him & the census of 1830 lists two male children ages 15-20. He also left land for her use. ____________________________ The 1870 Census of Caddo Parish, Louisiana (pg 426) has a Marena Turner born in Va. age 70 years, occupation keeping house, defined as female black living with Lewis Turner a black male age 18 born in Tex. (If the age is correct this could not be Lewis Turner's son as he died before 1847). Also living with her is Susan Murphy, black, age 45. Her neighbors are Touy, Parker, & Garrett all black families. Notes for EVALINE TURNER: 11-9-1868 Eveline, resident of Caddo Parish, LA. sold to Jacob Williamson the following land NE quarter of section 21 in township 15 North of Range 14 West containing 159 acres, situated and being in the Parish of DeSoto. ____________________________ 10-18-1869 Eveline Murray, resident of Caddo Parish, La, widow of Sylvester sold the following land North half of section 17, and SE quarter of the Se quarter of SW quarter of section 8, allin township 15, range 14, containing 5020 acres more or less. sold for 1500. for which she took a note from Andrew J. Nelson. The above land was purchased by she and Sylvestor from 1849-1859 see notes for Sylvestor ____________________________ 1870 Census Caddo Parish town of Shreveport page 415 lists Eveline Murray age 58 born Georgia living with Florence 18, Thomas 12, Sallie 8 all were born in Louisiana Florence is the Edney listed in the 1860 Census(Thomas & Sallie have not been identified as her natural children , they may be grandchildren or ?). Her occupation is Farmer and her real estate is valued at $500. All of Eveline's neighbors are black and include family names of Wilson, Garrett, & Gillian. Notes for SYLVESTOR H. MURRAY: 1830 Census Lincoln Co., Ga has a James Murray 50-60 living with 1 female 15-20, 1 20-30 and 1 50-60. This may be Sylvestors father????? ____________________________ 1830 Census Lincoln Co, Georgia 186th district pg 60 Ln 15 one male 20-30 years old and 1 female 15-20 years old and 3 slaves. This was in Goshen Community ____________________________ 1840 Census Pg. 69, LN 760 has Sylvestor age 30-40 living in Dallas County, Alabama with 3 males - 1 under 5 (Hillery) 2 5-10 (Beverly & Louis) 3 females 1 under 5 (Nancy age may be wrong) 1 15-20 (unknown) 1 20-30 (Evaline) There are 5 slaves (males 1-under 10 & 1 24-36 females 3 under 10) listed and the occupation is agriculture. ____________________________ 12-31-1849 Land records in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana show that on this date Sylvester Murray, resident of Dallas County, Alabama, bought the following parcel SE Quarter and East half of the SW Quarter of Section 17 in Township 15 of Range 14, the West half of the NW Quarter of Section 20 in Township 15 of Range 14, the SE Quarter of the NE Quarter of section 20 of township fifteen, Range 14, and the SE Quarter of Section 20, in township 15 of range 14. He put $500 down and took out notes for $1300. 3-13-1850 Land records in DeSoto indicate that Sylvestor Murray, a resident of the DeSoto Parish, bought from Allison Taylor, the following property: East half of the NE quarter of section 17, range fourteen township 15 containing eighty acres more or less and the West hal of the NE quarter of section 17 containing seventy-nine acres more or less and the SE quarter of the SE quarter of section 8 containing thirty-nine acres more or less and SE quarter of the SW quarter of section eight containing thirty-nine acres more or less, and the SE quarter of the NW quarter of section 17 containing thirty-nine acres more or less, and the SW quarter of the NW quarter of section 17 contining thirty-nine acreas more or less. All tracts or parcels of land lying and being in Township 15, Range 14. He put $750 down and took out 2 notes of $450 each for the remainder. 2-1-1859 Land was purchased by Sylvester in DeSoto Parish as follows NW quarter of section 26. the SW quarter of Section 22, the SW quarter of Section 23 and the North half of Section 27 and the SE quarter of Section 21 all in township 15 Range 14 containing 1,120 acres. Paying $4,480 with 1/3 down ____________________________ 1850 Census DeSoto Parish Page 185 lists Sylvestor Murray, 60 Planter age 40 born Ga, Eveline, age 33 born Ga, Lewis T. age 17 born Al, Hillery M. age 13 b. Al, Flemming F. age 9 b. Al, Andrew P. age 7 b. Al, Sylvester, age 3 b. Al and Nancy O. age 16 b. Ga ____________________________ 1860 Census DeSoto Parish page 920 lists Sylvester age 50, Eveline age 45, Beverly age 27, Hilery age 23, Flemmy age 21, Andrew age 16, Sylvester age 12, Edney age 7, Ella Stanley age 7 and Lizzie Stanley age 5 (These appear to be Nancy Murray Stanley's Children Grandchildren of Sylvestor), John Lee Murray 22 a carpenter (possible relation was born in Georgia), Isham Griff age 29 overseerer. Beverly, Hilery, Flemmy and Andrew are attending the farm. The slave census lists the following male ages 9, 8, 6, 3, and 7/12. female age 20 for a total of 6 slaves. JULIA ANN WILLIAMS, February 19, 1857, Grand Cane, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana7. Notes for LEWIS TURNER MURRAY: 1860 Census DeSoto Parish, La pg 921 lists him age 25 with Julia A. age22, son Curtis W. age 3, and daughter Elizabeth age 9 months. His occupation is Farmer and does not list any value for real estate possibly indicating that he was farming on his fathers land. They are living next to each other as Louis was visited by the census taker just after Sylvestor. ____________________________ Death Certificate of his son, Curtis, lists his name as Louis October 1, 1808, Julia A. Murray made Application for Widows Pension of Lewis T. Murray who entered the service of the Confederate States under the name of L. T. Murray at Shreveport, Louisiana on the 22nd day of March, 1862 in Co. 12th Louisiana Infantry and that he lost his life prior to June 1, 1865 from wounds received, or disease contracted in the service, on May 22 , 1865; that she was married to the said soldier under the name of Julia A. Williams on the 19th day of February, 1857 by Rev. Moses Williams, (her uncle) at her house 7 miles north of Mansfield, Louisiana and that she has lived in Louisiana for 61 years. She says that Lewis died 22nd day of May 1865 of consumption contracted in the war after having the measles in camp. Family tradition has it that when Lewis came back from the war that he was very sick and also dispondent about losing all his wealth. We are told that he said, 'I don't want to live a poor man, just sit me out on the porch and let me die.' MURRAY: 3-2-1914 H. J. Murray made Application for his Confederate Pension - states he ws born 1842 in Dallas Co. Alabama, enlisted at Shreveport, La January 1863 in Gayols Battery Artillery and that he served until hostiledge was over. He surrendered at Natchitoches in Company P Crescent Regiment and that he did not take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States Government. He claims to be a resident of Louisiana since 1849. At the time of application, his address was Pleasant Hill, Louisiana and his age was 71 ____________________________ 1850 Census lists him age 24 in Natchitoches Parish, La. probably Marthaville with his wife Elmira age 19 and son Zacharico age 1-his name is spelled Hilbern. v. Murray made Application for the Widows Pension of Andrew Jackson Murray stating that cause of death was rupture of blood vessel. 1860-1864-Confederate soldier index lists A. J. Murray, Pvt. Co. F. Cons. Cres. Regt. La Inf. On rolls of Prisoners of War of furloughed and detailed men, C.S.A., paroled at Shreveport, L. June 13, 1865 Res. Bossier Par., La 1900 Census he is in Natchitoches Parish, La, age 57 with wife Missouri age44, Jable M. 20, Chever D. 16, Nannie M. 14, Ebrem C. 11, and Maggie S. age 8. States that his occupation is Farmer, that he was born in Alabama, his father and mother were born in Georgia. Missouri was born in Georgia as were her parents. 1910 Census has him age 65 living in Sabine Parish, La with wife Missouri C. age 55, Chieber D. age 28 and Maggie age 17. They are working their home farm and have boarder named Morgan Brooks age 28. Marriage Notes for ANDREW MURRAY and MISSOURI BORN: Missouri's Application for the Pension of Andrew states that they were married 9-1-1876 by the Justice of the Peace at Carthage, Texas at despondants sisters house 7 miles from Carthage. vii.
