I have a microfilm copy of his obit. I have seen his tombstone in the Mt. As a part of the inventory of the estate: Slaves, belonging to estate of deceased as follows: PETER aged 47; STEPHEN aged 26; HARRIET aged 23; JOHN aged 6 years; MARY aged 3 years; JEREMIAH aged 31 years; MAHALA aged 37; PATIENCE aged 51 years; MARILDA aged 2 years; ELSIE aged 10 months In the appraisement of the estate: PETER is about 47 years of age $500; JEREMIAH is about 31 years of age $850; STEPHEN is about 26 years of age $900; MAHALA is about 37 years of age $500; HARRIET is about 23 years of age ($600)?; PATIENCE is about 51 years of age $ 0; JOHN is about 6 years of age $450; MARILDA is about 2 years of age $200; MARY is about 3 years of age $200; ELSEY is about 10 months of age $100. Note: I would expect that some of these people are the children and grandchildren of PATIENCE who is found in the estate of William W. SMITH in 1863. Included in the probate file: the matter of the estate was taken to the County Court of Clay County, Feb term 1852. The names and ages of the slaves and the names of the heirs of the estate are in the record again. As there was ample assets in the hands of the administrators, and the quantity and value of said described slaves ... that a equal partition cannot be made, ... according to their respective rights ... (there were children and grandchildren with rights to the estate); the court ordered ... "the Sheriff of Clay County, offer for Sale to the highest bidder at the courthouse door in the city of Liberty, on Monday the 1st day of March 1852, upon a credit to twelve months the said above described ten negro slaves for life and that the purchaser or purchases therein be required to give note or bond with approved personal security, and that he make report of his proceeding to this court ..." NOTE: I would except to find some of these people with the sons-in-law of William SMITH. Also in the estate records: A long list of notes: One note on hand on NANCY McCULLOCH for $55.80 due 16 June 1852 Also: A LIST, of the Debt due NANCY McCULLOCH promissory note, due 16 June 1852 - NO INTEREST DUE $55.80 ... this is the ONLY note that no interest was charged, he had many people who owed him money. Nancy is William SMITH's sister-in-law. She married a Joseph McCULLOCH ... possible lst cousin, a son of one of her mother's brothers? Her grandfather was a Joseph McCULLOCH. The Sale Bill of William SMITH (d. 1851) is 17 pages long.
