Shearer-DeHart-NC-Deed-1858 Macon CO, Deed Book I, p 332: "State of North Carolina, Cherokee Co ... Know all men by these presents that I Allen Shearer of the county and state aforesaid have this day for and in consideration of the sum of Eighteen hundred dollars to me in hand paid at and before the signing and delivering of these presents the receipt & payment whereof I hereby acknowledge ... I the said Allen Shearer have bargained and sold unto John DeHart ... a certain Negro boy aged about twenty nine years, named Ruffin also which boy I warrant to be sound in body and in mind except a deficiency of both hands, and a slave for life, ... ... also a negro woman named Sucky, aged about twenty five years, which woman I warrant to be sound in body and in mind and a slave for life ... ... and I do warrant and defend the title to the above described boy and woman free from me my heirs and assigns and all other persons claiming the same forever In testaimony whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal the 18th day of June 1858."
