According to family info Stephen did have a family but their names have been lost over time. Also according to family lore Stephen and his former owner had become good friends.
Stephen was even buried in the Old Savage Cemetery (as Stephen Savage) in Robertson Co., Tennessee. Stephen even took the name of his former owner and good friend Thomas Savage.
