SAPP, John - FL - 1852 In his will dated 1 Dec 1852, John Sapp bequethed several slaves by name. ... He left to his son, James Jackson Sapp, a negro woman named Martha, and her children, a boy named William and a girl named Ellen, and their future increase. ... He also willed that, for and in consideration of faithful services, his negro woman Caroline and his girl named Frances shall after his death be free of servitude. ... He further stated that due to the laws of Florida the freed slaves would have to leave the state, and if they should not be willing to leave the state, he devised them to the executors of his estate. This will was apparently written in Tallahassee, Leon Co, FL, because the three named executors were all mentioned as being residents of Tallahassee. The will was recorded in Madison County, FL, Adminstration Record Book B, on 4 Apr 1856. ... I noticed in the 1830 Census, Leon Co, that John Sapp was listed with a family of 8, plus 2 slaves. In the 1840 Census, he was found in Gadsden Co FL, with a family of 3, plus 2 slaves. In the 1850 Census of Madison Co, FL, a John Sapp was listed with 7 slaves (1 40 M B, 1 35 F B, 1 25 M B, 1 8 F B, 1 2 F B, 1 1 M B, and 1 7/12 M B). Contributed by: cch@netdoor.com
