#506 Savannah Slp Susan M: Wm. I. Rogers 16 Jan 1822

Deposition

City of New Orleans-- William I. Rogers being duly sworn says

that on or about the tenth day of January 1822, Colonel Davis of

Savannah in the state of Georgia called on the deponent and

stated that he had three Negroes to wit, Polydore, Monday and

Hannah which he the said Colonel Dennis would cosign to the

deponent together with a cargo of lumber to be disposed of at the

Port of New orleans, that he this deponent was informed at that

time by said Colonel Dennis on answer to an enquiry made by this

deponent for that purpose that two of said Negroes could not talk

the English language in consequence of their having been kept on

a plantation of his where the majority of hands were Africans and

that all the said Negroes of said plantation were imported ═

into the United States before the first of January 1808 .... that

after said conversation and before the shipping of the three

Negroes aforesaid the said Colonel Dennis had occasion to make a

journey to Philadelphia -- that one Samuel Philbrick in the

employ of Colonel Dennis sent the said Negroes to this deponent

on the 15th January 1822 on that day on the day after this

deponent shipped them on board the Sloop Susan a vessel commanded

by this deponent and cleared them at the custom house of Savannah

aforesaid in the capacity of shipper and master of the vessel,

the owner of the said slaves being about as aforesaid that this

deponent considered himself the lawful shipper of these slaves as

well as Master of the vessel which was deemed sufficient and

agreeable to the statute by the collecor of Savannah who granted

a clearance accordingly -- this deponent further says that there

has been no intention to evade the laws of the United States.....

Brig departed Norfolk on 13 March and arrived at New Orleans on 8

April with following note: Ma ╦rtha, aged 5 missing and no

changes took place except that "two negroes haved died on the

passage." Levin an infant and Martha were not found on board.

Also, Martha does not agree with the name specified -- it should

be Matilda "agreeably to her mothers apron." Note Levin, 4 month

infant, owned by Hervey and Martha(aged 5) owned by Montgomery.

 Martha, infant, should be Matilda.

Note: This and subsequent manifests appear to have been damaged.

This one was a handwritten manifest. One column was designated

shipper and another was designated "owner or consignee's name".

Most entries had no informat ╦ion listed under owner/shipper

columns. The name James Byers and his residence, Rapides

Parish-- Red River (Louisiana) appeared mid-way on sheet 1.

Furthermore, Byers signed the declaration on the status of the

slaves beneath Adams'/Odom's signature. It is therefore assumed

that James Byers is the owner/shipper unless a slave owner's name

was written directly next to an entry. In that case, that

owner's name was entered. Byers was always listed as both

shipper and consignee.

S/O Alexander F. Rose, Virginia Consignees: A. R. Taylor &

John Gray, New Orleans

This is a handwritten manifest. One additional column titled

"disposition?" was used under which the term for sale was written

for all those listed. Note that when shipper/owner/consignee

information differs from line Alexander F. Rose as shipper and

Taylor and Gray as consignees, it is indicated in the last

column. All were entered as black unless o ╦therwise

indicated. One additional peculiarity about this manifest is

that heights appear to have been entered incorrectly. Rather

than rounding them off, they are entered exactly as entered on

the manifests.
