Patton SC-1794, AL-1872 Slave Records from diary of Dr. William Patton, 1794 SC - 1872 AL Dr. William Patton, born 2 Oct 1794 Newberry Dist., SC, went to Greene Co., AL, in the early 1820's and died there 22 Apr. 1872. He married Elizabeth Steele on 20 July 1826 in Greene Co. He kept a diary from 1 Jan. 1835 to 27 June 1862, with a separate section called "Record of our Family of Black People." The originals were contained in a 3 volume set of John Bunyan's Works in which Dr. Patton wrote on blank pages, fly leaves and margins. The three volumes are owned by three different descendants, and at least one of the volumes has been permanently encapsulated. The records were "translated" and typed in 1952 by his great-granddaughters, and I am copying from a later typed copy, done in 1979 by another researcher. (Dr. William Patton was not my direct ancestor, but was a cousin. I do not know what happened to his slaves after the War between the States. I am copying the records exactly as typed, and know there are areas not entirely clear.) --Sue Harris The Records of William Patton Record of our Family of Black People: 1.
