Norwood-SC-Inventory-1848

Greetings everyone!

Here is a list of 171 individuals who were enslaved in 1848 on the plantation of Williamson Norwood which was located in what is present day Calhoun Falls, Abbeville Co, SC. Williamson Norwood's son, James A was the second largest holder of enslaved Africans in 1860. The will, dated 17 Apr 1847, was not seen. (Abbeville CH let us walk in & handle documents. I'm surprised that more aren't missing. I hope it has been photocopied & is at the SCDAH.)

The amendments, dated 27 June 1848 and 24 July 1848, were viewed. The will was proven 2 Aug 1850.

Identifiable Inheritors:
Children of Williamson NORWOOD
Caroline (decd) wife of M.B. Clark, James A, Mary A (decd) wife of R. Edmund Belcher, and Sarah A wife of John A Calhoun. 

Grandchildren: Joseph, Caroline, & Mary C. Clark. Warren P, Wm W, Williamson H, John H, Henry Clay, Jas N, and Mary Ann Belcher (not sure about all as RE Belcher had remarried).

Lowry Ware's _Slave Holders of Abbeville District 1790-1860 and Largest Property Holders-1860_ lists the following NORWOODS (#enslaved Africans) & related families:

1840: Jas Norwood (28); John Norwood (11); W Norwood (106); W Norwood (11); R. E. Belcher (24); John A. Calhoun (21); M. P.? Clark (12). 

1850: Jas Norwood (113); Mary Norwood (18); Robert E. Belcher (140); John A. Calhoun (103); Major B. Clark? (114). 

Note: The total number of enslaved Africans listed in this 1848 inventory = 171. Females = 85. Males = 78. Unknown = 8.
