Third Section: Colored Right of Ebersbach residence up hill leaning against medium size tree next to fence post, two large monuments, no other monuments found. BLACK, Rev. Reuben, d. 14 Mar 1877, 84-6-1 MOLAND, James, d. 7 Oct 1873, in 24th year of his life. Miss Ebersbach said her mother told her a colored man was found in the Ohio River and was buried here in this area. Negro Cemetery - Wolf Pen Situated on tip of a ridge in heavily wooded area on Basham property at Wolf Pen. Large area completely covered with myrtle and fallen trees, no posts or wire indicating fence visible. MC GILVERY, Comfort, 16 Apr 1832- 5 Apr 1895 WRIGHT, James M., 1834-1914 WRIGHT, Louisa J., 1844- ??, w/o James M. Wright Two sandstone monuments side by side, badly flaked in thin sheets, crumbling to touch, unable to find any writing. Two foot markers, no initials. Funeral home marker one foot high on small tube pipe; glass has broken and water damage has made paper inside illegible. Many sunken graves, unable to detect any markers. Christina Furth was told in 1988 by Ann Johnson, who then lived in Wolf Pen that an abandoned, very old negro cemetery, with no monuments, and what resembled ruins of old buildings were located on her (Johnson's) property, but that they were at the time unrecognizable. Black (Negro) Cemetery-- Abandoned Located on Denny property off Brier Ridge. Going over the right side of the road off the hill, the Denny sign is at right of road at turn off in the area of Gomer and Coy Hill Cemeteries. This is a very old cemetery, there are sunken areas, but no markers or monuments. According to the Denny's this area was to be strip mined and reclaimed in the near future. African Cemetery Take S.R. 7 to C-3 Leading Creek Road, follow through to intersection and bridge on left, turn left across the bridge and continue ahead past Carl's Auto Garage, C.R.362, beyond on hillside is Charlotte C. Haper's mobile home, and beyond at the top side of the hill is a Negro cemetery according to Harper's deed. She is postmistress at Syracue, OH and she said there are small rocks resembling markers. Many believe some slaves were buried here to hide their identity, therefore there were no monuments. This is on the route of run-away slaves (or Underground R.R.) and many were hid in the basements of the homes and in other nearby areas. by C. Furth.
