CHARLES MAY (1782) - 2 white males over 21 - 14 blacks, Buckingham Co. JOHN MAY (1782) - 1 white male over 21, 0 blacks, Buckingham Co., VA From other notes in this group of papers, I learned that Charles May was born around 1735, and died in 1812. He married Sarah Hunter (born abt. 1740 in Goochland Co. VA, d. sometime after 1789 in Buckingham Co. VA). John May was their son, born 2/27/1757, d. 3/ 20/1844. ALSO: From the same source, which cites the 1790 census of NC, Rockingham Co., Salisbury District: p. 169 - JOHN MAY - 4 males (3 und 16) 1 female - 8 slaves p. 169 - PETER MAY - 4 males (3 und. 16) 1 female - 7 slaves p. 169 - WILLIAM MAY - 1 male 0 females, 0 slaves Peter May was also a son of Charles May of Buckingham Co., VA. (born abt. 1758, m. Nancy Meredith 1779 in Bedford Co. VA, died March 20, 1844 in Rockingham NC), as was William May (born 1766 in Buckingham Co., VA.). Also from photocopy pile: "Rockingham Co., NC Deed Book H, pps. 149-150" 25 March 1789 - DEED OF GIFT in which SARAH MAY, of Rockingham County, North Carolina ... for love, goodwill, and affection for my children (namely - WILLIAM MAY, ROBERT MAY, REUBEN MAY, CASWELL MAY, THOMAS MAY, MOLLY (MARY) MAY, SARAH MAY. OF THE COUNTY OF BUCKINGHAM, VIRGINIA, of a certain negro (slave) wench of the name of "Suck," she and her increase ... these negroes only being lent to me by my father in his lifetime and sold to pay PETER MAY'S debts contrary to law ... etc ... Witnesses: George Peay, JOHN MAY - John Peay ... IBID, page 150: 2 April 1789 DEED OF GIFT in which SARAH MAY, of Rockingham County, North Carolina ... for love, goodwill, and affection which I have and bear towards my son, THOMAS MAY, of BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA ... a certain negro boy named Nathan who was lent to me by my father in his lifetime etc ... witnesses: George Peay, Sr., JOHN MAY, John Peay.
