Magnum-AL-Run Away-1843 Alabama Beacon Newspaper Greensboro, AL June 17, 1843 "RUNAWAY" From the plantation of the subscriber near Macon, Marengo County, Alabama, on the night of the 14th instant, a negro man named WILLIE. Said Negro is stout and likely, copper-colored, and between the age of 30 and 35 years. He is the property of Hon. W. P. Mangum of North Carolina, and was hired to me for the present year by Wm. Cain, Esq. of said State. He once run off from the plantation of J. H. Ruffin, Esq. in Marengo, was taken up in Tuscaloosa county, confined in the jail there, passed himself off as bearing the name of "Henry," and as the property of one Wm. Warren formerly of Orange County, North Carolina. He remained in jail six months, was sold for jail fees and purchased by Dr. Hullum, from whom Mr. Ruffin redeemed him. Any negro taken up as a runaway in any of the adjoining counties and attempting to pass himself off as owned by any one in Orange County, North Carolina, is probably this boy, and if taken up in Tuscaloosa County, will be known by reference to Dr. Hullum or J. J. Foster, Esq. The subscriber would be thankful for any information addressed to him at "Macon, Marengo County, Alabama," as well as willing to reward liberally anyone who would contribute to his return to my service.
