Gatewood-KY-1853 Will of Richard Gatewood written on the 29th of March 1852 filed for probate on 17 Jan 1853 Jessamine County, Ky., pg 424 Know all men by these presents that I Richard Gatewood of the County of Jessamine and state of Kentucky being of sound mind and disposing memory do make ordaine and constitute this my last will and testament--Revoking all others. 1st I will and direct that after my death that all my just debts be paid. 2nd I will and direct that my land shall be sold as soon after my death as my Executor may think most advisable within one year thereafter in the usual way one two and three years say one third in hand and the Ballance in two equal annual payments, they holding a lean on the same till all the purchase money is paid--at whick time I authorize my Executor to make as good a title as though I were here in person to make the same--towit a General warranty deed. 3rd. I will and direct my Executor to sell my slaves that are married also including my Boy ANDREW at private sale for the best price that can be obtained for them for cash or on a credit of nine months as my Executors may think proper. 4th, Upon consideration I direct that my Boy CHARLES shall be sold in the same manner as the above slaves. 5th I direct all my other slaves except my old man TOM shall be sold publicly or private as may be deemed most proper--it is desired by me that the children shall be sold with their parents. 6th I direct my Executor to retain two hundred and fifty Dollars out of my estate for the maintainance of my Negro Man TOM--however should he die leaving a portion not appropriated for his benefit it is to revert back to my estate and shall be distributed as my other property. The above named TOM shall have the liberty of selecting his home. 7th I will and direct my Executor to sell all my stock Crop it being matured my house hold furniture and every other description of property belonging to me at my death--on a credit of nine months ample notice being given. 8th I direct my Exector so soon as the money shall be collected from the sales of the above property that my Executor shall first pay to my son William Gatewood and my Daughters Mary Anderson and Susan and Sarah Gatewood each the sum of six hundred dollars in order to make them, equal with my other children--after which I direct my Executor to divide the remainder arising from my estate equally amongst all my children, with this condition that my Executor shall have full power to invest the money in all cases--for the benefit of such of my children as he may think incapable of doing the same in a safe and judicious manner and particularly the heirs of Augustine Gatewood for the benefit of children. 9th I hereby appoint my friend W. S. Barkley Executor to this my last will and testament in Testimony whereof I have unto set my hand and seal March 29 1852. Richard Gatewood Test, Will f. Carty, Isaac Cook, H. C.
