Garlick's Will, VA, 1856 GARLICK, Mar G. "In the name of God Amen. I, Mary G. Garlick of New farm King William County with gratitude to my heavenly father.....now make and constitute this my last will & testament revoking all others. ... Item 1st I give and bequeath to my dear daughter Mildred C. Garlick...the following property - viz. my servants Richard, Billy, Robert, Susan and her children Sophia, Sarah, Reuben, Winny, Tommy and Walter, Dorinda and her children, James, Nat, Robert and Eliza, and Lucinda with the increase of the females. These servants are intended to make Mildred equal to my other children for what they have already received. ... I also give to my daughter Mildred C. the following servants - Joe, Henry, Octavia, George, and the increase of the females. ... 2nd. I give & bequeath to my said daughter Mildred C. all the interest I have in and to a parcel of land sixty acres more or less called Terrysfield. ... To the said land the two first children of my late Husband by a former marriage were entitled to a child's portion; to one of these children, Mrs. Mary Semple wife of Mr. James Semple, I gave one negro Girl named Maria for her portion in the said land ... 4th. I also give to my said daughter Mildred C.....one -third of all the servants not herein specifically devised or given away. ... 5th. I have some years ago given in trust to Mr. A. Brown and my son Braxton for the use of my daughter Sarah Selden and her children, servants, to wit Eliza & her chldren Maria, Lucy, Shirley, Reuben, James, Henry, Emma and Susan, Nelly and her children Robert, Sophia and Armistead, Martha and her children Ann and an infant, Sally and her child Juliet, Ellen and her child, William and Nat, Andrew and Martin with the increase of the females. ... I now give and bequeath in trust to my dear nephew William P. Braxton for my said daughter Sarah Selden and those of her children living at her death, provided none of her children die before she does leaving children, then such child or children to take the parents share the following servants, To wit - Anne, Jerry and James and the increase of the females, the last named now hired in Richmond. ... 7th. I also give to my nephew William P. Braxton in trust for my said daughter Sarah and such children as she may have living at her death.....one -third part of all the servants I may leave at my death not specifically bequathed or given away. ... I further direct & will that if my said daughter Sarah Seldon & her children or any of them claim of Mr. A. Brown and Braxton Garlick (who are trustees for the property mentioned in the fifth item in this will) the value of one of these servants named Robert who was conveyed by me in trust and who was sold improperly by Mr. Selden (Sarah's husband) with the knowledge of any one interested, that then these servants last herein devised in trust to Wm. P. Braxton for Sarah & her children shall be liable to pay whatsoever maybe claimed for the said servant Robert. ... 8th. I have heretofore given to my dear son Braxton the following servants, to wit: Delphia and her children Milly, Joe, Beck, Owney and Reuben and Bernard, Robert. ... I do hereby give and bequeath to my nephew William P. Braxton for my son and his children in trust one-third part of all the servants I may have at my death undivided and not given away herein. ... 10th. I give to my nephew William P. Braxton for his many kind services my servant man Carter. ... 11th. My servant Maria, Nat's wife I leave to whichever of my daughters she may choose for her mistress, hoping she may be well taken care of. Should she choose my daughter Sarah then she is to be considered as given in trust to William P. Braxton as the other property given him in trust. She is to express her election before disinterested gentlemen. ...............My undivided servants are Owney and her children, Martha, Anne, Ben, Frank, Johnny, Beverly, Louisa, Sallie and her children, Agnes, Bolla, Mortimer, Infant, Katy and her children Charlotte, Venus, Andrew, & Bartlett, Lena & Addison Richard, Jr. ...
