EDWARDS, Halifax Co, VA, WILL, 1790 Written 1785, Probated 1790. Will Book ?, p 405, 406. (Note: Charles Edwards and his wife, Letty Martin Edwards, owned a large estate in Halifax Co, VA and Granville Co, NC - the counties border each other. When looking for slave records, try both counties as Charles apparently listed slaves in tax lists for both.) Charles does not list or mention slaves in his will (they must have been considered part of "my estate both real and personal" that he states in his will but an inventory of his estate, April Court 1791, lists the following slaves and their value in pounds. This is taken from the original and the writing is not always clear - those marked with a ? are questionable transcriptions: Names of Negroes and what Appraised to . . Dick, 45 (all numbers are in pounds) George, 65 Fabb, 60 Davy, 20; Janey, 15 Children of Fabb Bobb, 25 Ambrose, 45 Juda (?), 60 Milley, 55 Cucko (?), 12 Harry, 45 Joe, 70 Jack, 70 Patience, 60 Tom, 50 Rachel and Child Isbell, 60 Suk, 18; Suce (?), 15; Solomon, 15; Anna, 10 Children of Rachel Annikey (?), 50 Nan, 37, 10 Ioiles (??), 35 Ceasar, 35 Charles, 60 Moll, 30 Contributed by: Linda Banwarth By way of: Susan Buckley (spice3@juno.com)
