Creswell-SC-(no date) I've vowed to catch up on some stuff (including updating the Abbeville Enslavement Data Page). With that I'm sharing information on this CRESWELL document (received permission from Charles to share this) but I will try to excerpt stuff as not to take up much bandwidth. If anyone wants copies of the complete correspondence please email me. Note: This email address will disapear on 13 Jan 1999. Please use scabbegen@aol.com after that. In the 1960s Charles purchased a document called: James Creswells Confederate Tax. property. for Abbeville. He determined finally that this was Abbeville SC. He wrote: "In any case, I've attached a copy (in Microsoft Word) of my transcription of the piece listing 17 slaves ranging from 6 months to 72 years, other property, and my description of the paper, ink, etc. This is followed by some tentative conclusions that I drew about it a few years ago, some questions that I might want to have a student doing a directed individual study investigate further, and some options of what I might do with it. Obviously, the most useful to genealogists interested in Abbeville is to make the information available to you for posting on the Web and otherwise making the information available to African-Americans who are looking for their roots." That info & Charles' email address will appear next. -- Sonia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ James Creswells Confederate Tax. property. for Abbeville Ages Value Phyllis an old woman 72 000 Nancy . . . . . . . . 39 700 Jackson . . . . . . . 9 400 Sinai . . . . . . . 7 300 Phyllis . . . . . . . 3 200 Martha (small) 28 600 Lee not sound 4 200 Walter . . . . . . . 2 150 Sarah . . . . . . . . 45 400 Hester & infant 6 mo. 31 700 Reuban . . . . . . . . 7 350 Sam . . . . . . . . . . 5 250 Cato (carpenter) 40 1000 Natus, Rheumatic 35 500 Joe (field hand) 40 600 Nathan do 18 900 Agregate 7250 200 acres ridge land. 3rd quality Average $ 453 2 buggies $75 & 50 125 1 pleasure carriage 250 1 gold watch "50 Stock Greenville & Columbia (RR) 65 shares Bank Stock - None Notes on Int. Blue wove paper, typical of the era, with chain lines but no watermark. The ink is typical black/brown. The columns of the listing are lightly drawn in pencil. Hand is quite readable and better than average. Condition of the paper is excellent with no tears, stains, or deterioration of inked areas. Although it is undated, there is no reason to doubt that is an authentic document from the 1861-1865 era that its subject matter implies. Tentative conclusions: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and South Carolina all have places currently with the names Abbeville, Columbia, and Greenville. Most likely, it is from South Carolina. Abbeville is the county seat of Abbeville County and lies about approximately 40 miles southeast of a point about 40% of the distance along a line drawn from Greenville to Columbia, South Carolina, the presumed route of a Greenville and Columbia railroad.
