Will of SAMUEL BROWN, Dated 6 Nov. 1817, Probated 8 Oct 1825 Green Co., NC.

In the name of God amen, I SAMUEL BROWN of the County of Green and State of No. Carolina, being sick and weak in body, but of sound, disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this Instrument of writing to be my last will and Testament in manner and form following, viz: I recommend my soul to Almighty God, who gave it me. My body to the earth to be buried in a decent manner and as touching my worldly estate, which it has been pleased God to bestow on me I leave in the following manner:

Item - I lend to my beloved wife Elizabeth BROWN, so long as she may continue to be my widow, my land and plantation whereon I now live, my still, all my kitchen furniture, all my farming utantials, my bofat and crockery ware, one Bureau, one trunk, and Walnut Table, all my sitting chairs, one flax wheel and two woolen wheels, also two beds and furniture,
... also two negroes, known by the names of MELBA and CENTHA.

Item - I lend to my wife Elizabeth BROWN during her natural life,
... one negroe named DICY, one bey horse, my chas and harness, one feather bed and furniture, two cows and calves, six head of sheep, two sows and pigs, all the Geese and dung-hill fowls;
... I also give to my beloved wife Elizabeth BROWN a sufficient quantity of corn, Pork, etc., to maintain her and her family decently one year.

Item - I give to my beloved son Abel BROWN my land lying on south side of Nantrenta Swamp containing by estimation one hundred and forty acres more or less; adjoining the land of A. DARDEN and others to him and his heirs forever.

I also give and bequeath to my son Abel BROWN
... two negroes known by the names of DRED and AARON, also one black horse, bridle and saddle, one no-horn cow and yearling, two heifers, also ten head of sheep, also three sows and pigs and twelve shoats, one feather bead and furniture, and all the household and kitchen furniture, which is at his disposal at home, also two cutting axes and two hoes, one plow hoe, stock & traces, and his part of the corn that grow'd on his plantation, to him and his heirs forever. ... also two negroes named AXUM and CHARLOTTA, one bed and furniture, also all the property of whatever kind which he has now in his possession in Pitt County to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Samuel BROWN at the death of my wife or of her marrying, my land and plantation whereon I now live, lying on Nantrenta dna Appletree Swamp, also after the death or marriage of my wife I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel BROWN
... one negro man, MILBY, also one barrel still, also all my farming tools, the kitchen furniture and bofat and crockery to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my said Samuel BROWN one tract of land on the long branch adjoining J. HOLMES,
... one negro girl named MARY, one bridle and saddle, one bed and furniture, one cow and calf, two sows and pigs, four head of sheep, one Gum table, to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Peggy BROWN
... two negroes named EDAH and CHAMPEN, one feather bed and furniture, two head of cattle, three sheep, one flax wheel to her and her heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Charlotte FORREST
... two negroes named ISHAM and SOPHY, one bed and furniture, one heffer, four head of sheep to her and her heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Clary BROWN
... two negroes named HANNER and MARCH one bed and furniture, tow head of cattle, three head of sheep, one blew chest and at her mother's death or marriage one wallnut table to her and her heirs forever.

Item - After all my just debts are paid I leave to be divided equally amongst all my children shear and shear alike, all the property lent to my wife which have not been given away, also all the property which is not divided in this will to them and their heirs forever,

and lastly I nominate, constitute and appoint my two sons Abel and John BROWN my executors to this my last will and Testament, revoking all others heretofore made by me. In witness whereof I the said Samuel BROWN hath hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th November 1817.
